In the 1960s, the historic and iconic Mauna Kea Beach Hotel was founded by visionary venture capitalist, art collector, and environmentalist Laurance S. Rockefeller. He envisioned an elegant luxury resort that would reflect the spirit of its extraordinary setting on the Kohala Coast.
Māla Designs has worked closely with the resort’s leadership team to thoughtfully redesign and update the landscape, ensuring the grounds evolve for contemporary use while remaining true to the original design intent and timeless character of the property.

One Ala Moana is a 23-story, 205–206 unit ultra-luxury condominium tower in Honolulu, Hawaii, uniquely positioned above Ala Moana Shopping Center and directly adjacent to Ala Moana Beach Park. Completed in 2014, it represents one of the city’s landmark mixed-use developments, seamlessly integrating high-end residential living with one of the largest retail destinations in the world.
Māla Designs has redesigned the rooftop and pool deck gardens, elevating the amenity experience into a refined tropical retreat that reflects both the luxury character of the building and the spirit of Hawaiʻi. The landscape design emphasizes layered greenery, sculptural plantings, and lush garden spaces that soften the architectural lines of the tower while enhancing views across the ocean, city, and surrounding mountains. Thoughtfully selected plant palettes and integrated garden zones create a serene resort-like atmosphere for residents, transforming the rooftop and pool deck into a private elevated oasis above urban Honolulu.
